Types of motorhome insurance

Insurance description
Motorhomes are classed as road vehicles and motorhome insurance is therefore compulsory by law – providing yours hasn’t been registered as off road. As with most kinds of motor insurance, there are three main levels of cover for your motorhome – third party only, third party fire & theft, and fully comprehensive; which are the same as car insurance cover levels. • Third party only covers any damage to third parties that may occur in an incident that involves your motorhome. Any damage to your motorhome will not be covered. • Third party fire & theft has the same cover as Third party only, with the addition of cover against fire and theft. Again, if your motorhome is damaged or written off in an accident then you will not be covered for the damage to your motorhome. • Comprehensive cover is as above, plus your motorhome will be covered in the event of an accident. It is legally required to have at least Third party only cover for your motorhome, unless you have declared your vehicle off the road through a SORN.

Motorhome Insurance FAQs

  • Do I really need motorhome insurance ?
In short, yes! Motorhome insurance is a legal requirement if your vehicle is taxed to drive on road system. The fact that motorhomes are mobile makes them targets for thieves and new or high-spec motorhomes can be very valuable. The only case where you do not legally need insurance is if you have a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) and the vehicle will not be driven on public roads, but as a motorhome represents a significant investment for most owners, it can be best to stay on the safe side rather than risk going uninsured, even if your motorhome is in storage.
  • How can I reduce my insurance costs ?
Having security devices such as a wheel clamp could reduce the premium cost for some policies, as could storing your motorhome in a secure CaSSOA location when it is not in use. Having past no-claims bonus on motorhomes or even cars may also reduce your premium, so be sure to enter your details accurately when getting a quote. The amount of driving you expect to do also impacts your premium cost, so if you are certain that you will not drive more than 1000 miles during your policy term, then ensure that you select the correct mileage on the form.
  • Am I covered to take my motorhome abroad?
This varies greatly depending on the insurance provider and the policy you have selected. Be sure to check the results page to see if “Covered Abroad” is active and check for any country exclusions before you complete your purchase with the broker. Abroad cover is usually for Europe, so you should check with the provider if you wish to travel beyond Europe.
